This painting depicts Antoinette in a bath, decked out in jewels like the Queen she was supposed to be. Antoinette was vilified for spending too much even though that’s what was expected of Monarchy at the time. And she was vilified again when she stopped spending because now she was putting France’s fashion houses and jewellers out of business. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
