In Greek Mythology Psyche, a young Princess, often represented by a butterfly, is Aphrodite’s daughter-in-law. After Psyche injures her husband Eros, Aphrodite punishes Psyche by giving her four impossible trials to complete, before she is allowed to see her husband again. This painting depicts Aphrodite at her worst, a conniving and cruel mother-in-law, depriving her son from his wife and unnecessarily punishing her daughter-in-law.
